We are all exposed to a veritable flood of information every day – information that our brain has to process constantly.
The morning walk through rush hour traffic alone is a real marathon for the brain.
Don't you think so? Elon Musk has just built the world's largest supercomputer to teach cars how to drive autonomously. This shows the huge amounts of data that have to be processed while driving alone.
In addition: messages, announcements, social media notifications, phone calls, advertising on all corners, lots of noises around us, newsletters, appointment reminders on the mobile phone and a thousand more things.
The result: information overload.
Our brain just gets tired at some point because of all the information. Or perhaps it would be better to say: It's running hot. Because that's what it feels like when the brain has to work at full speed all the time.
So it's high time to give the brain a break regularly.
My suggestion for this: Take a little time out more often (maybe even every day) – a 5-minute reset.
To do this, switch off the mobile phone and all devices with a display for 5 minutes, put away all books and magazines. Turn off the music and anything else that distracts you for this short time.
And then...
… you just do nothing for 5 minutes!
Let yourself be surprised what happens. What thoughts go through your head or what feelings you can perceive in yourself.
This exercise is actually about not doing or achieving anything specific.
In the past, one would have said to find leisure.
At the beginning, this may be a bit unusual and may even make you a little afraid to be thrown back on yourself. But you can also make the exercise shorter or interrupt it if it gets too much for you.
But it's definitely worth it, because afterwards you feel calmer and clearer – at least that's how I usually feel after the exercise. And the exercise reconnects you with nature – in this case, your own nature.
Because being thrown back on yourself also means being with yourself – your own nature, when you have so much.
Make this little exercise an integral part of your daily routine and give your brain the rest it deserves more often!
